Cotton Production In India Will Not Be Reduced.

Although the cotton planting area in India decreased by about 500 thousand hectares in 2008-09, cotton production may not be affected.

The main reason is that farmers are planting genetically modified Bt- cotton seeds, and the yield per unit area is expected to increase.

Mr DK Nair, President of the India Textile Industry Association (CITI), confirmed that nearly 80% of the farmers were planting Bt cotton, and the cotton yield per unit area was greatly increased and the output would reach 32 million 500 thousand packages.

The reduction of area can not seriously affect the total cotton yield.

Cotton planting area is lower than last year's 9 million 70 thousand hectares, as of August 17th, the planting area is 8 million 590 thousand hectares.

On the contrary, BT cotton planting area continues to expand, more and more farmers sow genetically modified cotton seeds, planting area reached 80%, compared to last year's ratio of 65%.

So far, the government has approved 263 hybrid varieties.

Experts believe that the overall planting area of cotton has been reduced because of insufficient rainfall in major cropping areas, and flooding in many parts of Punjab has also led to a further decrease in planting area.

Although the textile industry believes that the planting area is reduced and the output is still quite large, the textile industry is facing some major difficulties, such as high cotton prices and strong export demand.

Even the lowest drop in output may have a negative impact on cotton mills and exporters.

Only last year, India produced 31 million 500 thousand bales of cotton, but in January to June, the price rose by 40%.

Therefore, the cotton harvest can not be the only standard of the government. The government must control the price, because only when the domestic environment is favorable, can the enterprise develop.
